Ocean View Beach, north of Norfolk, is located on the former Ocean View summer resort and amusement park. Resort construction began in 1855 and continued through the 20th century. In 1899, the Ocean View terminus offered amusement rides from the Ocean View Amusement Park. Ocean View attracted many summer-time visitors with its exciting rides, music in the ballrooms, fishing from the pier and beach-time fun.
In 1910, Eugene Ely became the first person to make a successful airplane launch off the deck of a ship - the USS Birmingham. He landed the plane safely on the Willoughby Spit beach, not far from Ocean View. Even though the amusement park was demolished in 1979, the beach is still a favorite summer-time spot for families. With a bathhouse, a gazebo, picnic tables, free parking and plenty of warm sand, its a wonderful Norfolk area destination. While in town, rest comfortably in a Best Western guest room and enjoy a peaceful night's rest.
