Communities across western Virginia are making their last stand this season, inviting visitors and residents out to enjoy a wide variety of special events and cultural festivals before the cold weather comes in.
The 2014 Harrisonburg International Festival is a celebration of Harrisonburg’s rich and diverse community on September 27th. Join in the fun as an extravaganza of performance, visual, musical and culinary art, representing cultures and regions all over the world, brings people together at Hillandale Park.
To the southwest, the communities of Wytheville, Hillsville, Radford, and Roanoke gather for a traditional cultural celebration of their own on October 11th. Held at Radford’s Moffet Field, the 2014 Annual Highlanders Festival is a celebration of Celtic and Scottish heritage, complete with the games, music, dancing, and entertainment of old.
Locals and travelers alike gather in Lynchburg, east of Roanoke and south of Lexington, for the 17th Annual Day at the Point on October 4th. Taking place at the Point of Honor, a historic 1815 home offering daily tours, the festival brings living history presentations together with food, kids’ activities, arts and crafts, classic period songs, and more. The educational fun goes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Visitors to Winchester will want to leave the kids behind when the 2014 OctoBeer Fest takes over the Old Town Winchester area on October 17th and 18th. In the spirit of legendary Bavarian traditions, visitors enjoy traditional food, live music and dancing, and, of course, beer.
The neighboring communities of Waynesboro and Staunton ring in the holiday season with the 2014 Christmas Parade on December 6th. The theme for this year is “All I Want for Christmas,” as Santa prepares to ride down Main Street in Waynesboro atop a decorated fire engine, along with more festively lit floats, marching bands, dancers, and cloggers.
