Visiting Northern Virginia
Northern Virginia communities from Alexandria and Arlington to Falls Church and Springfield make the most of the remaining summer sunshine by hosting more special events, festivals, and outdoor activities than any other time of year.
First-time Arlington and Alexandria visitors won’t want to miss a chance to see some of the nation’s most iconic attractions Gadsby’s Tavern Museum, George Washington Masonic National Memorial, and the Old Presbyterian Meeting House.
Dig in even further and check out historic focal points like Arlington National Cemetery, the John F. Kennedy Gravesite, and the United States Air Force Memorial, while you’re at it. Of course, you could always just use the help of this season’s warm and sunny weather to work on your swing at Greendale Golf Course.
To enjoy at day at the ballpark while avoiding the big crowds at Washington National’s games, bring the family out to G. Richard Pfitzner Stadium, just south of Springfield in Woodbridge. The future big-league stars of the Potomac Nationals promise all the fun and excitement of America’s Pastime without the headache of maneuvering trough DC traffic. Check the schedule during your northern Virginia visit – the 2015 MiLB season goes through the first week of September.
Travel west to Sterling for another glimpse at the way it used to be. Kids will love the Heritage Farm Museum in Sterling. Let the little ones milk a plastic cow, ride around on miniature John Deere tractors, hunt for plastic chicken eggs, and visit an old general store stocked with plastic fruit and more. There’s also real classic farm equipment on display.
Fairfax City visitors enjoy especially easy access to the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, the companion facility to the Museum on the National Mall. Managed by the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, the facility extensive collection features numerous aircraft from different eras in the Boeing Aviation Hangar and space artifacts, including the space shuttle Discover, in the James S. McDonnell Space Hangar.
