Visiting Northern Virginia
Fall is a fine time to visit the Mother of States. The northern region bustles with as much US Capital activity as ever, but it's not all suits and white hair. This season, northern Virginia communities from Alexandria and Arlington to Fairfax City and Sterling promise all sorts of family-friendly fun in the form of special events, festivals, and outdoor activities.
First-time visitors would be remiss not to get out and explore the Capital region's countless iconic attractions. Arlington is home to historic points of interest like Arlington National Cemetery, the John F. Kennedy Gravesite, and the United States Air Force Memorial – and each is best experienced on foot.
Film buffs flock to Alexandria, November 6th through 8th, for the 9th Annual Alexandria Film Festival. The three-day event showcases more than 60 feature-length films, shorts, and documentaries at venues throughout town, including the AMC Hoffman Theater 22. Check the schedule for individual showtimes, as well as information on how to be a part of panel discussions, meet-and-greets, and more.
That same weekend, families head west to Fairfax City for a fun way to dispose of Halloween decorations. The 2015 Pumpkin Madness Fall Festival invites visitors to bring used jack o' lanterns to Cox Farms, where they will be hurled, dropped, and smashed. Starting at 10 a.m., the fun also includes midway rides and games.
What do you get the person in your family who has everything? The 2015 Holiday Market might just have your answer. Held the three weekends in December before Christmas at Del Ray Artisans art gallery in Alexandria, the market boasts a broad selection of one-of-a-kind, handmade gift options.
