Visiting Northern Virginia
It's not all powdered wigs and politics in the Capital region this summer. Though home to some of the iconic landmarks and historic attractions the Capital region is known for, northern Virginia also enjoys a separate culture and personality. Find out what makes northern Virginia a travel destination in its own right by joining in any one of countless outdoor activities, special events, festivals, and family-friendly activities this season.
Still, visitors, especially first-timers would be doing themselves a disservice not to head toward the Capital and explore those iconic landmarks and attractions. Arlington lays claim to focal points like Arlington National Cemetery, the John F. Kennedy Gravesite, and the United States Air Force Memorial.
Nearby Alexandia is home to historic places like like Gadsby's Tavern Museum and the Old Presbyterian Meeting House. Best of all, summer days are long and full of sunshine – what better invitation to get out of the car and explore these areas on foot?
Skip the big crowds – and the DC traffic – around Washington Nationals games and enjoy America's Favorite Pastime with the Potomac Nationals at G. Richard Pfitzner Stadium, just south of Springfield in Woodbridge. These Nationals play a few times a week through the first week of September. Check the schedule during your stay to be a part of the action.
To the west, Fairfax is especially proximal to the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, a satellite facility of the Museum on the National Mall. Officially part of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, the Udvar-Hazy Center invites aerophiles young and old to see aircraft from throughout history in the Boeing Aviation Hangar, along with space artifacts like the space shuttle Discover in the James S. McDonnell Space Hangar.
Looking to get out and get active this season? How about contribute to a good cause? How about both at the 10th Annual Stomp Out Sickle Cell 5K Walk. From Arlington, head north across the Potomac River to the National Mall to participate or to simply cheer on the runners and celebrate with them at the finish line. If you do decide to run, make sure to be there early to get your stretches in – the startling line gun sounds at 8 a.m. on September 10th.
