Head to the Boulevard Historic District – listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places – for many of Richmond’s massive museums. River City’s Museum District features the Virginia Historical Society, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
Established in 1831, the Virginia Historical Society is the third oldest historical society in the country, and features long-term exhibits like “Virginians at Work” and the historic Virginia House living museum. Founded in 1934, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts presents works of African, American, European, Ancient, and Asian art – plus art deco, Fabergé, and contemporary pieces.
Set in northern Richmond, the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is an 80-acre scenic playground, home to a rose garden, glass conservatory, healing garden, and even a children’s area.
Other museums in Richmond include the Science Museum of Virginia, the Virginia Center for Architecture, and the Old Dominion Railway Museum. If you’re looking for live theater, don’t miss performances at the Barksdale Theatre and Theatre IV – and be sure to catch the Richmond Symphony and the Virginia Opera at Carpenter Theater.
