Visiting Richmond & Central Virigina
Central Virginia shines brightest in the summertime. This is the season for all kinds outdoor activities on the region’s sunny and sandy beaches and in parks like Shenandoah National Park. Even better, visitors are invited to do as the locals do by joining in with this season’s range of special events, festivals, sports, and other family-friendly fun.
Music is in the air over central Virginia this summer. From June 9th through 11th, the 2016 Dinwiddle Music Festival brings three days of live bluegrass performances to Virginia Motorsports Park in Dinwiddle, just minutes from Richmond.
Where better to soak up some summer sunshine than at the ballpark enjoying America’s Pastime? The future big-leaguers of the Richmond Flying Squirrels go to bat at the Diamond, in the heart of Richmond. Check the schedule during your Richmond-area visit to be a part of the action.
Plan to catch a game on September 5th, when the 2016 Bark in the Park event invites fans to bring Fido along for the fun. It’s a great way to spend Labor Day with your four-legged family member – and it's also the last Flying Squirrels game of the season.
Just west of downtown Richmond, the Boulevard Historic District is a must-see for any first-time visitor looking to understand Richmond’s colorful past. History buffs and fans of classic architecture will get a kick out of Colonial Revival-style structures like the Home For Needy Confederate Women and the Boulevard Bridge.
To really dig in, check out the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, also located on Boulevard. This summer’s special exhibits include paintings by Benjamin West and a variety of activities for children. There’s also a weekly jazz night every Thursday evening called the Dominion Jazz Café, and Friday Art & Wine wine events are a great way to meet new and likeminded friends all summer long.
