If you plan on flying in, you'll most likely land at the Richmond International Airport. You can drive in from nearby cities like Waynesboro and Stafford to enjoy scenic views of central VA. You'll find VCU adjacent to Monroe Park just northwest of downtown Richmond.
Established in 1838, VCU is a public research institution originally known as the Hampden-Sydney College. It was 1854 when the school then became the Medical College of Virginia. VCU was officially created in 1917 when the Medical College of Virginia merged with the Richmond Professional Institute. It features an urban style campus of approximately 143 acres.
Enjoy an informative and pleasant campus tour with your future high school graduate and take in some of the campus sights – don't miss the James Branch Cabell Library, the VCU da Vinci Center, or the Shafer Court Dining Center. Drive in from nearby Fredericksburg, found just to the north along I-95.
After your campus tour, set aside some time to visit the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden or the tour the Gilded Age mansion found on the grounds of Maymont Park. History buffs will no doubt set aside some time to check out the Richmond National Battlefield Park.
While VCU and the Richmond area are home to historic attractions, you'll also be able to check out a variety of college sports. Make your way into Richmond from nearby Doswell or Sandston and check out the excitement of VCU basketball. College basketball is a popular source of entertainment in Virginia – Old Dominion University and VCU share an intense state rivalry.
During the winter and into the spring, head for the Stuart C. Siegler Center, home of the VCU Rams basketball teams. Watch as the men's and women's teams compete against other A-10 Conference opponents. Drive north from nearby Hopewell and check out a game.
In the spring and into the early summer, visit The Diamond, home field of the VCU Rams baseball team. Soccer fans often makes trips to the Sports Backers Stadium for VCU Rams soccer matches. And time you're at a VCU Rams sporting event, keep an eye out for Rodney The Ram, the VCU mascot.
