Visiting Western Virginia and Appalacian Mountains Area

The Blue Ridge Mountains define the Northwestern geography and heritage of Virginia. Part of the Appalachian Mountains, the Blue Ridge Mountains are one of the most spectacular regions. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a National Scenic Byway and an All-American Road that takes travelers from the Shenandoah National Park, through Virginia, to North Carolina. Roanoke, a commercial and cultural hub for the region, developed rapidly around the railroad and coal industries. Originally named Big Lick, Roanoke was renamed after the Roanoke River. Wise, in the far western tip of Virginia, has three historic main street buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, is a delightful small town to visit.

Wytheville located at the crossroads of Interstate 77 and 81 is a common stop for travelers heading west. The Chautauqua Festival, June 19th through 26th 2010, is a week long celebration of Wytheville's best arts, culture and entertainment. The festival begins will a Hot-Air Balloon Festival and 1-mile fun run for the kids. Live entertainment on the main stage in Elizabeth Brown Memorial Park is featured each evening topping off days filled with exhibits, activities and demonstrations. The week ends with a 5-K race, car show and an ice cream eating contest for everyone. The Best Western Wytheville Inn is conveniently located off the freeways and is ideal for travelers. Known as Virginia's Olympics, the Coventry Commonwealth Games of Virginia are a summer tradition. Roanoke hosts the competitions, most of which are held in July. The 2010 games kick off with the Athlete Tailgate Party and Opening Ceremonies on July 16th. Athletes, fans, family and friends are welcome to come out and enjoy the entertainment and festivities. The town of Wise hosts the Battles at Wise July 9th through 11th. This 2010 Civil War living history presentation re-enacts the capture of Gladeville and the battle of Cranesnest. Historic Wise is an ideal location for a summer getaway to see and celebrate US history. The long weekend also features a parade, camp tours, even a fashion show and period wedding. The Best Western of Wise is conveniently located and with affordable rates, you may consider spending a day exploring Bark Camp Lake or the Appalachians nearby.
