Visiting Western Virginia
Fall visitors find western Virginia in what is arguably its finest form – cooled by mild breezes, painted by the broad strokes of changing leaves, and altogether alive with activity. Outdoor adventure opportunities abound and, from Wise to Winchester, communities throughout the Old Dominion welcome visitors with a wealth of special events, festivals and family-friendly fun.
There may be no better time for golfers to visit the region – this season's cool weather makes western Virginia's countless first-rate golf courses an exceptional choice. Wolf Creek Golf & Country Club is especially nice for Wytheville visitors, and players in Roanoke and Hillsville will agree the 18-hole, par 72 course is worth the drive. Further north, Caverns Country Club Golf Course is the ideal place for Luray, Harrisonburg, and Ruckersville visitors to work on their swing.
Luray, Culpeper, Harrisonburg, and Ruckersville are also gateways to Shenandoah National Park, and the 80,000 acre park is at its most picturesque when dressed in its autumn wardrobe. With nearly 70 different mountain streams, ponds, and lakes, the park is also gives fishermen the chance to reel in bass, trout, muskie, and more. To the south, Roanoke residents and visitors head to Claytor Lake State Park to fish for muskie, bass, and catfish of their own.
Winchester celebrates with a bevy of Bavarian traditions on October 16th and 17th. Held throughout Old Town Winchester, Octobeer Fest 2015 promises plenty of German-inspired food, craft beer, and wine. You'll also find face painting, balloon animals, a caricaturist, a photo booth, a magician, and more for the kids.
Cyclists descend upon Staunton and Waynesboro for the 2015 Shenandoah Fall Foliage Bike Festival, October 16th through 18th. Register now to ride through Augusta county in glorious weather during peak fall foliage season. After the ride, downtown Staunton hosts the FREE BIG STREET PARTY, with live music and entertainment, food, area restaurants on hand offering special deals on food and drinks.
