Visiting Western Virginia
A summer visit to western Virginia can mean a wealth of outdoor fun in some of the most beautiful weather the region sees all year. Parks and destinations like George Washington National Forest are ripe for exploration, while communities from Wise and Wytheville to Harrisonburg and Winchester are gearing up for more special events, festivals, and family-friendly activities than in any other season.
Long days of summer sunshine mean more time to spend out on the links – and western Virginia lays claim to countless top-flight golf courses. One of the best in the region, Wolf Creek Golf & Country Club, is ideal for visitors to Wytheville, and golfers in Roanoke and Hillsville can make a short drive to enjoy the 18-hole, par of 72 course as well. To the north, Caverns Country Club Golf Course isn't far from players in Luray, Harrisonburg, and Ruckersville.
Music is in the air over Culpepper all summer long. On the third Thursday each month through August, the Depot in downtown Culpeper hosts the 2016 Culpeper Downtown 3rd Thursday Summer Concert Series, which features all kinds of live music and family-friendly fun. Bring your blanket, lawn chairs, and maybe even your dancing shoes.
The 2016 July 4th Fireworks & Festival is a great way for Lexington visitors to celebrate our nation's independence. The Virginia Military Institute and Parade Grounds are set to host the patriotic fun – it's an afternoon of games, food, activities, and more, culminating in a dazzling fireworks display.
The 2016 Doah Fest is a unique, three-day event, July 15th through 17th. Held at the Farm in Luray, it's an opportunity to unplug, relax, and get back in touch with nature, with everything from live music to visual arts, yoga, bonfires, and sharing of ideas.
Beer lovers in Lexington can cool off with a cold one at the 2016 Rockbridge Beer & Wine Festival on September 10th. It's a bevy of craft brews and fine fermentations from local and regional purveyors, along with live music and more at the Lime Kiln Theater in Lexington.
